The Seacoast Beacons

Brian Grondin

Allow me to introduce myself, Brian Grondin, a self-proclaimed hockey addict. Now that we've got that out of the way, here's a glimpse into my life.

During my childhood, I played every sport but focused mainly on football, basketball, and baseball, eventually earning the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level in all three sports, ranging from Division III to Division I. Ultimately, I chose to pursue Division IAA football at Sacred Heart University. Unfortunately, an injury cut my football career short, leading me to a surprising twist of fate—hockey. Despite financial constraints preventing me from playing the sport as a child, I always cherished the joy of skating on frozen ponds. However, with limited access to local rinks and the cost involved, hockey seemed unattainable for both me and my family.

But as an adult, that all changed. I discovered a deep love for hockey, not just for the sport itself, but for the incredible community that surrounds it. Over the past 15+ years, I have immersed myself in hockey, playing, coaching, and officiating year-round. Along this journey, I also got married and welcomed two children, Colin and Bree, settling down happily in the charming town of Wells, Maine, conveniently close to three rinks within a 20-minute drive.

In late 2020, amidst a divisive political climate and the pandemic driving people apart, I felt compelled to create something that would bring people back together. With encouragement from the current leaders of the Seacoast Beacons, I embarked on a mission to establish the Seacoast Beacons Hockey League. Working collaboratively with a small team, we used our shared passion for hockey as a guiding light, leading us back to the rink. In that space, everyone shares the same love for the game, allowing us to momentarily forget about external distractions.

Despite navigating the challenges of Covid-related concerns and policies, our league had a successful inaugural session, and it has only continued to grow stronger. Currently, we oversee three distinct adult seasonal leagues across two partnered rinks, with a waitlist of eager players. This past summer, we expanded our reach by partnering with a third rink in Maine and hosting our first Preseason Youth hockey camp and now this summer host our 2nd.  We have also added a summer tournament team this summer.  As we forge new relationships with additional rinks and programs, our goal is to provide more affordable programs for youth, fostering a lifelong passion for the sport.

Nick St. Germain

My name is Nick St. Germain, while Brian may be addicted to Hockey, I would say I have a healthy passion for the sport in that it is the best game on Earth!

Much like Brian, I grew up playing pond hockey. I started to play organized hockey at the age of 12 with borrowed equipment from friends.  I quickly became hooked and have been playing ever since. I began coaching youth hockey in my 20’s.  Around that same time, I began to play adult league hockey – though was challenged with trying to find the right fit – ice times and optimal level of play.

My wife and I have two boys and of course I just had to introduce them to the sport.  We got them on the ice almost as soon as they could walk. They both have embraced hockey and now we are most definitely a hockey family!  Both of our sons play on travel teams and play all over New England. I currently coach a 14U Bantam team at Oyster River in Durham, NH.

I met Brian five years ago when my then 5 year old son was coached by him in a learn to play program. He had forty or so 5 year old's on the ice and was not phased. I offered to jump on the ice to help and we have been friends, coaches and hockey nuts ever since.  Combining our passion for hockey, we coached youth hockey teams and began playing hockey together.

Our vision for the Beacons brand is to fuel a love for the game. To offer opportunity to those who have always wanted to play and may not have had the chance or maybe want to continue to play at a level that works for them. We want to offer a Beacon to hockey enthusiasts – youth thru adult who just want to play the game.
